Tip 3. Paper shredders can save your life seriously. This could be the best investment you have ever made. Believe it or not crooks will dig through your trash. Shredding your important documents can reduce your probability of becoming a victim of identity theft by at least 20 percent.

Tip 4. It is a great habit to check your banking account online at least once a week to make sure there is not any unauthorized transactions on your banking accounts. With today’s online banking it is very easy and free to set up a online banking account. If the bank does not require it you should change your pin numbers regularly.

Tip 5. Clean out your wallet or purse. Do not carry your social security card. Wallets and purses are often stolen; do not make it easy for these criminals to steal your identity. For the same reasons you should never carry your passport or birth certificate on you either.

Tip 6. When you are setting your passwords do not use your name or a word in the dictionary. Make them something really bizarre and random that only you will know.

Tip 7. Use an anti-virus program on your computer. A thief can actually hack into your computer and view all your files and steal your personal information that way. You are just asking for trouble if you do not use an anti-virus program.
