The whole topic of credit repair is huge with many different viewpoints. To decide if it is acceptable or not is usually the first question to ask, then secondly is it morally right or wrong? There is much gray area on both sides of the debateand one will only have to make the right decision for his or her situation . This article is about facts however and is written in neutral language as to give the reader the opportunity make the best decision.

Firstly please understand that a person cannot just simply change his social security number or name just to get a new credit file. Of course you can change your name legally but you will end up with the same social security number as your previously issued one. On the contrary you can legally obtain a completely new social security number if you can prove that you were a victim for identity theft. If you are able to get through all the red tape and paperwork to be successful, you will end up with a new social security number but your same name. Of course you could endeavor to do both but to most government officials this would look rather fishy . By this point you can see this is very challenging .

Many years ago it was quite easy to just alter your social security number to avoid bad credit. That technique is deprecated now as all credit bureaus verify your social security number through the Social Security Administration, and most list the state and year it was issued right on the credit report. Another old technique was assuming the identity of a deceased infant close to the year you were born. The whole premise behind this method was since the infant died at such an early age the social security number was never used for credit purposes so it would be easy to build new credit on it. Once again the technology age caught up and now the credit bureaus cross reference social security numbers with the Social Security Administration’s Master Death Index. The Master Death Index is a database of deceased persons and the Administration will “mark” the number inactive. All credit bureaus and financial institutions subscribe to monthly updates to the database. It would be terrible to attempt to open a new account at a bank and only for the representative to inform you that your social security number is being reported as someone no longer living!

In more recent times the technique of using a Credit Profile Number has become the major player in the credit repair business arena. The Credit Privacy Number is essentially an Employer Identification Number (or Tax Identification Number) issued by the IRS for businesses to use when filing taxes and reporting employee wages, etc. Oddly enough it is also a 9 digit number just like a social security number. Initially one would only have to apply for the EIN and start using it just like the social security number when applying for credit. It worked for many years, until the credit bureaus began to verify social security numbers basically being able to tell the difference between a social security number and an EIN or TIN. The technique is now updated and credit repair clients are instructed to open a small business, apply for the EIN and begin building business credit. The goal is to put everything in the business’s name (property, credit cards, etc.). Although this can be effective most creditors will still do a personal credit check on the principals of the business to check credit worthiness.

Now on the horizon is seemingly a new technique using sophisticated, sci-fi type technology that will create a new credit file within days without needing a credit privacy number or altering your social security number at all. The technology is called Layered File Integration, innovated by Dutch computer programmers on the Greek isle Cyprus. “…The New technology was tested on a server that responded to SQL database queries but instead of returning the correct data when queried, it would return alternate data based on specific protocols set up by the programmers.” Philly.com. In layman’s terms, when the computer system identifies a security threat it will give the intruders fake data instead of the real data. Later, if the fake data is ever used the authorities will know immediately and can trace it back to the original intruders. A great way of fighting security attacks! The new technology was licensed by a software firm in Cypress and is now the backbone of a new credit repair product called Credit Magic Software. It works by returning a favorable credit file whenever the consumer’s credit is pulled. So in other words it sets all database request to register as a security threat. In return it renders a different credit file than what’s actually in the credit bureau databases. Smart! But just like the other techniques mentioned above, how long will this method last? Is it truly a second shot at perfect credit? Only time will tell…
